Ocean on the horizon
The meadow faces west over Highway 101 to open Pacific water — grey whales in season, fog that burns off by noon, and sunsets with nothing in front of them.
Private estate · Del Norte County
A four-bedroom house on an open meadow above the Pacific, held on three sides by Redwood National and State Parks.
The place
Sea Elk Ranch sits on Highway 101 just outside Crescent City, where the last of California gives way to Oregon and the redwood forest runs straight down to the water.
The meadow opens west to the ocean and is bounded by Redwood National and State Parks on the other three sides, so the view does not change and the quiet is not borrowed. Elk move through the grass at dawn. Two seasonal streams cross the property. A young orchard is in its second year of fruiting. The water comes from a spring on the land.
The house was built to match it: generous, warm, and unhurried, with a porch long enough to lose an afternoon on and a kitchen built for cooking for everyone at once.
Why people come
The meadow faces west over Highway 101 to open Pacific water — grey whales in season, fog that burns off by noon, and sunsets with nothing in front of them.
Redwood National and State Parks wrap the property on three sides. Old-growth trail heads are minutes from the gate, not a day trip away.
Four bedrooms, three and a half baths, a dedicated office, a proper laundry room, a sunroom and 3,245 square feet — enough for two families or a long working stay.
A new orchard in its second year of fruiting — pears, apples, cherries, grapes and five kinds of berries — two seasonal creeks and the property's own spring water. The land does something all year, and you are welcome to be part of it.
The house
The kitchen is the largest room in the house and the one everybody ends up in: dual ovens, a gas range, and counter space for several cooks who are not in a hurry.
Off the main rooms, a sunroom catches the morning and the front porch — which runs the width of the house — takes the evening. The office has a door that closes, so a working week here is a real option.
“The elk come up out of the park at first light and cross the meadow like they own it. Which, to be fair, they did first.”Sea Elk Ranch
